Returning via France (by Michelle)

So, we returned from our trip north with a quick dip into France on the way home. Ever since the European Union you can cross the border with more ease than driving into California. Really! They don't even stop cars at the border.

We went to St. Jean de Luz, a lovely village on the sea. Other than the church (which I absolutely love) there isn't much "official" to see. So we explored and looked for a crepe stand. In the end I slipped into a crowded bakery that had the most tantalizing window display. I've never liked macaroons, but the shop lady swore by them so I bought a few macaroons and a few of the shop's specialty, mouchous (which is "kiss" in Basque) made on accident once when the macaroon recipe failed. Both cookies were heavenly--nothing like a macaroon in the US. They had a crispy flaky outside and then moist and almost like marzipan on the inside.

Back in Spain, for our final stop we went to one of my favorite museums, the Chillida Leku Museum. Eduardo Chillida is a Basque sculpture who died 3 years ago. His caserio (farm house) and land has been turned into a sort of park/museum with his sculptures dotted around the grounds. It is green, green and a great place for taking photos, exploring and relaxing. Here are a few of my favorite shots from this time.
